Defensible Space – A defensible space is a buffer zone around food resources and structures (including buildings or greenhouses) that is free of flammable material (Ventura County Fire Department, 2013). The purpose is to stop wildfire progression and provide a safe area to operate in. In some cases, creating defensible space may reduce the amount of usable land for gardening.

The following is an example on how to set up a defensible space (Appleton, Frenzel, Hillegass, Lyons, & Steward, 2009; Colorado State Forest Service, 2013). The actual dimensions are subjective and depend largely on the surrounding environment (e.g. urban, rural, or on a hillside).

• Up to 5 Feet from a Garden or Structure – contains no flammable material (e.g. boxes, fuel, or trash); contains no trees, brush, weeds, tall grass, dead grass, leaves, debris, residue, firewood, or combustible mulch; overhanging trees or dense vegetation are trimmed back

• Approximately 5-10 Feet from a Garden or Structure – contains fire resistant plants; contains firebreaks (e.g. walkways or rock gardens); trees are thinned out and kept small; trees are pruned or limbed up to 10-15 feet from the ground; trees are kept at least 10 feet away from structures, with 10-15 feet of crown spacing between them; trees that can fall on structures (e.g. diseased or leaning trees) are removed

• Approximately 30-100 Feet from a Garden or Structure – contains no yard debris; grass and weeds are mowed 6 inches or less to at least 30 feet out; vegetation is thinned to about 100 feet out on the downhill side of a slope; shrubs and cover crops are kept free of dead material and kept small; brush and weeds are controlled; slopes are terraced
